Cookies & Carrots

"Now are you sure that you'll be ok?"

Michael Guerin looked at his wife lovingly as she hurried around their house. "Yes Maria, I think I can handle it."

She stopped and looked around. "Where is my...?" She trailed off. "Ok, well you have the list. The list is important Michael. Don't stray from it, and if there are any problems just call me."

Michael grabbed her and pulled her in for a kiss. "I love how worried you are, really, but everything will be fine."

She let out a sigh and smiled. "Ok."

"Corie! Lets go!" Michael called, and a young child with blonde hair and bright green eyes bounced into the room.

"We going daddy?" She asked.

"Yes we are." He lifted her up and held her, while grabbing the list and his wallet of the table. "Tell mommy bye." He said.

"Bye mommy!"

Maria kissed her on the cheek and then kissed Michael on the cheek. "See you in a little bit baby."

Michael smiled at his wife, then turned and hurried out the door before she could yell anymore instructions at him. He secured Corie in her car seat and started the car and they were off.

"Now where to begin." Michael said to himself, looking around the giant grocery store.

"Mommy usually starts with cookies." Corie said from the cart.

Michael pulled out the list and looked at it. "Cookies aren't on the list kiddo." He told her.

"Yeah, but mommy gets them anyway." She assured him. He nodded and headed off towards the cookie aisle.

"Oreo's or Chips Ahoy?" He said, holding them both up to show her.

"Ummm both." Corie said nodding.

"Ok." He threw them in the cart then checked his list again.

"Fruit and veggie time." He picked up some carrots and Corie turned up her nose.

"I dont like carrots." She said, matter of factly.

Well they're on the list. He told her.

She scrunched her nose and shook her head. "Mommy never buys carrots."

"Well Daddy is." He laughed, kissing her on the forehead.

Michael checked the list again. This was easy, Maria was worried for nothing. He could grocery shop.

"Its time to get cereal." Corie said, pointing to the cereal aisle.

Michael pushed the cart over to the cereal and handed Corie a box of Corn Flakes. "YUCK! Mommy buys Cocoa Puffs. Not icky corny flakeys."

"Are you sure?" Michael asked, looking back at the list. It said Corn Flakes

"Daddy, I am very sure. Get the Cocoa Puffs."

Michael shrugged. Corie went shopping with Maria every week, she probably knew what they got. He put the Corn Flakes back and grabbed the Cocoa Puffs.

Michael checked his list and again they were off in search of the next item on the list.

"Chicken." Michael said, putting it in the cart.

"I don't like chicken." Corie said.

Michael shook his head and laughed. "Let's go get orange juice."

"I don't think I like orange juice."

"What do you like?" Michael asked her. His daughter was so opinionated, though it shouldn't surprise him, she was the spawn of two of the most opinionated people in the world.

"Ice cream, cookies, chocolate milk..." She went of for a while as he pushed the cart away, abandoning his list and just getting whatever Corie rattled off.

"You're a way better shopper than Mommy." She said, as they finished.

Michael nodded. "Well thank you. I think so too." Ha Maria, he thought. I can grocery shop just fine.

Michael and Corie walked in the house, Michael was bogged down with bags and Corie was carrying a coloring book and crayons. She bounced off to her room and Maria smiled. "How did it go?" She asked.

"I did an awesome job. Thank you very much. He told her." He leaned down and kissed her then set the bags on the counter.

She started going through them and putting things away, and he plopped down on the couch and flipped on the TV.

"MICHAEL!" He heard from the kitchen.

He stood in the doorway and looked at his infuriated wife. "What did I do?" He asked.

"What is all this stuff? Cookies, ice cream, soda, candy, chocolate cereal Did you even look at my list?"

"I got carrots and chicken!" He said. Corie said you usually got that stuff.

Maria shook her head and sighed. "Michael, you let our 5 year old grocery shop? Did you realize she just had you buy what she wanted?"

Michael looked down at his feet like a child getting reprimanded. "No." He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, then looked up. "Sorry."

Maria laughed. "You cant say no to her can you?"

"No."

Maria wrapped her arms around his neck and smiled. "It's ok. Ill forgive you."

"I don't have to sleep on the couch tonight then?" He said smirking.

"No, I suppose you can sleep in the bedroom. But next time, its the living room for you buddy."

"Mommy! Daddy!" Corie ran into the kitchen and waved a piece of paper in front of their faces. "I colored for you." She said, shoving it in Maria's hand.

"Its beautiful sweetheart." Maria said, smiling. "Now come help me put these groceries away."

"K." Corie started pulling stuff out of the bags and Michael stood back and watched his wife and his daughter interact and play. It was amazing watching his family, loving as much as he loved them, and being loved.

He joined in, helping putting the groceries away, and laughed with them. In his mind, everything was perfect exactly how life should be.
